Ī́ča. adj & s. Frozen, hard with frost as the soil in Winter. 2 Frozen land.

Īčána. v. i. To freeze & get hard as the soil and used only of the land.

Īčö́nata. v. i. To get quite hard with frost. To turn hard with frost. To harden.

Īčö́nuřkāta[[t]]ka v. i. To get harder and harder thro’ the frost as the soil in Winter.

Īčö́nuřgā́mata. with Möni prefixed To get into the ī́ča state occasionally.

Īkamándeka. v. tr. To īkamāna upon any person or material. To put down in this sense. To draw a line. To write a word or letter. To draw a figure &c.

Īkamandātū. v. i. To īkamāna one after another as a member of men their names in a book; or a boy several pages in his book.

Ī́kamatö́lli. v. i. or tr. To īkamāna here & there, hurridly [sic], without order, or carelessly.

Ī́kamā́nīa v. i. or tr. To be engaged writing. To write or be writing continuously, To keep on writing. To [[sit]] be lying down writing.

Īlínata. v. tr. To reach with the hand. To touch. To take by stretching out the hand

Ī́liŋgā́mata. v. tr. To reach out the hand to touch, reach or take any thing yet not far enough to reach the object so that it falls or get away. To reach out the wrong hand, or at the wrong time. To īlina in place of some other person, or after, or in turn with.

Ī́nāpáiaka. s Such paiaka as is in season & cheafly [sic] used in Winter specially Löx

Ī́nakūpái. prep & adv. On the West or upper i.e. higher side of. This word like Iŋgögūpai, īlakūpai, urögūpai, ītakūpai may be rendered by any of the following words, Behind, beyond. the higher the upper, on the other side of, but in all these cases regard must be had according to its real meaning as seen in fifth line above. To, or on the West shore or coast of an island «not» of bay or channel.

Tūlara ī́nakūpai. The Western side of a mountain whether considered as the back or front of it. Round at ditto. Round to ditto. To ditto.

Ī́nakūpái. Tun The upper teeth i.e. the teeth in the higher jaw.

Ī́nakūpaindáulum. The the [sic] Westward or upper i.e. the higher side or coast of.

Ī́nakun. On the west side or coast of. On the upper side of. Kö́nǰi ī́nakun Just a little or immediately a little higher up or more to the west than that.

Īnána. v. i. (Īnénata. To come on as Winter). To be or come as Winter.

Ī́nadā́ra All thro’ the Winter. All the Winter thro’. Every winter.

Ī́nia. v. i. & tr. To anchor, come to an anchor. To moor to kelp.

Ī́nia. v. tr. To give a canoe to a person. To let a canoe be or a person.

Ī́niāköna s & Ī́niā́lū. vs. i. s & pl. «To be lying at anchor.» To anchor, i.e. to come to an anchor. To lie or be at anchor.

Ī́nix. s. Small spearheads of bone such as boys use in play or in catch [sic] small fry.

Ī́nābíx s Such birds as come & stay the winter but are not found at other times.

Ī́nū (see Īlū) adv. (Direction) Westward. to the West. 2 Upward, higher, up a hill. N.B. Like Īlū, iŋgū, ītū, úrū, uššū, this word may be translated by many of our loose English terms, but the above must decide the meaning of any such terms used. Thus down- or up-channel, out to sea, out there, over there, acroſs there &c, &c, but direction either westward or upward from the shore must be understood or these terms wd not give or bear its meaning.

Ī́nū yéka. A little further or more west. 2 A little higher up either on the land from the shore, up a hill, or a little higher on a wall &c &c.

Áiiū v. tr. To fix in by binding as the fish and bird spear into its shaft, or as téławal & ufköř into their handles. To bind in this way. 2 To remove the bone from the neck of birds in order to eat that part the more readily

Aiiū́a or Aiiūāki. One not having the spear head not bound into its groove in the shaft end.

Aiiūö́nari. v. tr. To call a dog into the water as a man in his canoe to his dog ashore.

Áiiūarā́gū. v. tr. To call ashore. To summon ashore To call to & tell to come ashore.

Áiiūšwā́na. v. tr. «To cook beside, not on, in, or over the fire as eggs, or choice blubber &c.» To toast or roast before the fire as a piece of blubber or a fish.

Áiiūkáia. v. tr. To call, summon, bid to come up.

Áiiūšū. s. Such bark as is used for canoes. The thick bark of grown trees.

Áia. s. & adj. Gall. The gall bag. Like gall i.e. bitter. 2 Easily split & straigh [sic] splitting. A term used to define wood fit for spears, such as splits kindly & works readily. 3 Willing, promptly willing. cheerfully or readily willing. Not averse to work or effort. inclined to. Energetic. 4 Poor, thin, used only of limpets v. tr. To sew in or on the bark bottoms of buckets and canoe bailers

Áiaša. v. tr. To cover over as with grass, leaves or other loose things. To cover over with bows in order to shut off the sun or rain. To cover as birds their eggs To cover up, put on wet or dry grass & other things on a fire to make a signal smoke.

Áiašāgā́mata. v. tr. To partly or imperfectly cover over. To cover over afresh what twas covered in whole or part. To cover up besides, or after another person. To cover over the wrong place or thing. To cover in mistake. To cover over by accident or unintentionally. To cover over instead of someone else.

áiašagā́mata. Mö́nit- To cover over occasionally not always, not everytime [sic].

Áiašata v. tr. To cover over & thus finish. To cover over & thus hide from view To cover over a fire with grass, leaves or green boughs & thus cause a great smoke

Áiašākö́na. v. tr & i. To cover over on board any craft. To be covered over on board. To be aboard covered over as for instance a lot of eggs in a basket.

Áiaminī́a. v. tr. To áiamína continuously, always, regularly. To constantly employ.

Áiamiŋkö́na. v. tr To áiamína when aboard. To send or give orders to a person on board.

Áiamiŋgā́mata. tr. With or without “taiamögat” prefixed To aiamina one person instead of another With “möni” prefixed To áiamína occasionally, not always. With the verb prefixes indicative of going in any direction prefixed this verb signifies To aiamina “en paſsant” or on ones way any where.

Áiamiŋgā́muřčélla To employ a little occasionally.

Áiaminārū́gata. Troubled about giving employment to. To have trouble in connection with the employment of persons. Awkward in employing. To give a person a meſsage to take in an awkward manner, or in such a way that he is in doubt as to what he is to say, or do.

Áiamū́ārū́ga[[´]]ta. v. tr. To trouble with orders. To give so many directions as to cause confusion.

Áiaminūkáia. tr. To send (aiamina) [[down]] up. To tell or order a person to go up.

Áiaminūmī́na. tr. To send, tell, order a person to descend or go down.

Aiaminūmānatsiköri. v. tr. To send, order, tell a person to go out or withdraw.

Aiaminūāšapöna. v. tr. To give order upon order as a mercileſs master, not letting his servant have a moments rest, but unduly hurrying him.

Aiamindātū. v. tr. To send several persons one after another. To send a meſsenger hither & thither to do one thing after another.

Áiami«n»tūwörā́gū. To send, order ashore. To bid go ashore.

Aiamitölli. v. tr. To send a number of persons with any order, or capriciously. To send one person to do one thing and another without any method, so that the person ordered does not know what he is to do, or say.

Áiamiyélla. v. tr. To have sent or ordered. To send again. To send once, & then not again. yeka. To “aiamina” in any of its senses a short time longer, or a little more. ūkâali To “áiamína” once more, or one more. To aiamina once more for a short time.

Aiamuxköna. To “aiamaka” or be fighting on board ship, boat, or canoe.

Ī́takunčía. He, she, or it is inside or within, or under &c. They are ditto.

Ī́talum. (Ī́talumấala. Men of or from the east.) From the east. From below, from the lower to the hig«h»er parts. From an eastward direction.

Ī́takáus. Position lower down any ascending or steep surface. further east.

Ī́tan or Ītař. The or an east wind or [[sea]] breeze. = Ītalum hūša.

Ī́tančiísin The or an Eastern country. A country lying far east.

Ī́tan hā́ni. A north east breeze. or wind. = Ītalum hāni.

Ītasiŋgilū Down there below you, further down than you. Down there, over there acroſs there, &c, &c, to the east of you. Down there on the beach below you.

Ītū adv. of direction Eastward. To the east. Out, up or down East as maybe [sic]. Down ward [sic] towards the shore. Down hill. Down as down a wall. Downward towards the lower part or end (as down a page.

Ī́tū mötā́sif. The eastern point, headland, «extremity» reef, promontory etc of any land.

Ī́t hauamö́či. Down, over, acroſs, round there on, or to the east side of me.

Īyī́gata. v. tr. To fill. To fill full. intr. To be full or filled. part. Filled. full. To take, fetch, bring any full veſsel as a basket of mussels &c. as Īyīgat haia höx. Bring me (a basket) full of eggs.

Īyī́gatī́a. v. i. To be full. or filled. To be in a state of fullneſs.

Īyī́guřmö́ni, or Īyī́guřmū́tū, or Īyī́guřgáia. vs. i. To be full or filled either with liquids or solids.

Īyī́guřdā́tū. v. i. pl. or v. tr. pl. To be filled as a number of veſsels in a place. To fill full a number of veſsels one after another.

Īyī́guřpa[[´]]lána. Īyī́guřmagā́tū. vs. i. pl. To be full or filled as many veſsels together.

Īyī́guřkö́na & İyī́gutā́lū. vs. i. s & pl. to be full in any vessel afloat, as barrels. Kīyīguřgārata háuākin amáiim ūkấali tauwö́la I have a basket filled with, or full of, fungus aboard.

Ī́ya. v. tr. or intr. To anchor, cast or drop anchor. To moor. To come to an anchor.

Ī́yixkö́na. v. i. «To have in». To be filled or full aboard. To have aboard anything full.

Ī́yixmö́ni, Ī́yixmū́tū, & Ī́yixgáia. vs. [[t]] intr. s. To be full or filled with liquids or solids.

Ī́yixmagā́tū. Īyixpalana. vs. intr. pl. To fill or full, to be full or filled. Kīyixgārata hau ānan amaiim yeka. I have some fungus in a basket in my canoe.

Īyā́pai & Īyā́lū. The dual & plural verbs of Īya & = Īniāpai & Īniālū.

Ī́yākö́na. & Īyā́lū vs. «in»tr, s. & pl. To be at anchor. To be lying at anchor.

Áiaia! It is aia! It was gall. from Aia & ya.

Aiaiā́gū v. tr. To áia for, i.e. on behalf of, another person see áia. & aiiū.

Aiáitas. s. Such parts in the woods free of scrub & dry especially when šöšči abounds.

Aiṓa. or Aiấa. A time, or run, or season of good succeſs in hunting. Hipa mamūtux aiṓa yārum. We have every prospect of good succeſs now.

Aiṓa[[´]]na. Readily killed. easily or safely obtainable by hunting as such animals as have no means of self defense as guanacos.

Áiakāsi. s. A term including such fish and birds which come in from the ocean to the inner waters periodically. It includes Sprats, shrimps, hapáiim, lösář, yápakā́ma, dáuinabáila, aiū & other fish, also all that claſs of sea birds which prey upon them as penguins, dāšulux, Mollies &c, &c; & fur seals.

Áiakúrū. adj. Willing. Agreeable. Customarily, usually willing. Of a willing disposition.

Aiak-āgū. v. r. To aiākū for oneself. To set nooses or noose birds for oneself.

Áiakwī́a. v. i To be set as nooses. (Hauan annū aiakwīa yamanančia. These nooses laid here belong to some one.

Áiak-ūmū́adātū To noose or catch birds in whalebone nooses.

Áiagata. v. i. To dive as whales & porpoises perpendicularly. To gambol. To turn head over heels as boys. To raise the fluke up on end & dive.

Áiagö́llum. s. The whale killer a sort of sword fish which preys on whales.

Aiaxmöni v. tr & i. To be occupied setting nooses. To set nooses constantly.

Aiaxmūtū. To be occupied setting nooses. To set nooses. To do thus often.

Áiaxyélla. To set noose [sic] & leave them a while. To have set nooses.

Áialamö́ni. v. i. To rise up in a great flame & smoke. To flame up in a blaze.

Áialön. s. Flame, Blaze. A flame, a blaze. A cloud of smoke or dust. as from a great fire, a volcanoe, or from a land slip.

Áialuš. s & adj. Yellow, the color of gall. literally red as gall. or gall red.

Áialušúnata. v. i. To get, grow, become yellow «& thus» to deepen or lighten in color as may be.

Áiamaka v. i or tr. To fight, quarrel, strive together. To engage in any angry contest. To struggle. To struggle with or against. To resist. To wrangle.

Áiamaka ūa. To quarrel or fight with great animosity, or in revenge.

Áiamakākúrū. Fond of fighting, prone or wont to fight. Hot headed.

Áiamakwīa. To be fighting. To keep on fighting. To be occupied fighting.

Áiamakö́nnaka. Unable to fight. Unaccustomed to fighting, never fighting.

Áiamakö́nnakā́na. tr. To fight awkwardly, or in the wrong way. To fight miserably.

Aiamikūči. v. tr. To send a person aboard any floating veſsel or drawn conveyance.

Áiamimī́na. v. tr To send down. to order a person to go or come down.

Áiamimö́či. v. tr. To send or «or»der a person, dog or other creature down.

Áiana. adj. Willing, not averse, not resisting. yielding, ready. v. tr & i. To yield. not resist. To be willing, not averse to.

Áianána. adj. & v. i. Witherer, dead, decay. To die, wither used only of vegetation.

Áianna. adv. (as Aianna hadātudē I ran first) First. earliest, soonest.

Aiannâaia. adj. Earliest. First, Soonest.

Áiannâáia tissā́ki. (Aiannâaia mamāgūa The first born) First fruits.

Áiapař adj. Meagre in flesh, lean, thin, emaciated.

Áiapux. s. The common otter a sea animal, not river.

Áiasi s. The layer of fatty substance underlying the blubber of whales, is redder than the blubber, & not so thick, & separating it from the flesh is a thin veil of skin called Öwönamö́ga. w. s

Áiasi wā́pisa. The aiasi cut off in slabs from the whale.

Aiasína & Aiasínata. v. i. To be all away from the wigwam or other place, as when an extra low tide calls all away to gather shellfish.

Áiata s. The inside or hollow of the knee. The sinews of this part.

Áiata. v. tr. 1 To take, take away, fetch, bring, a spear with its point duly bound in. 2 To finish making a kāla or tūkū. To sew round or in the bottom of a “kāla” or tūkū or kāniyöš & thus finish off.

Áiatöx. = Aláuun. s A variety or kind of shag black with a little white on its abdomen.

Aiö́nnakā́na. v. tr 1 To aia 2 To aiū, so as to spoil, damage. To aia, or aiū badly.

Áiāgū. v. tr 1st To aia, 2ndly to aiū for oneself, or what is one’s own.

Áiākū. v. i. & v. tr & s. 1st The shrub and its wood called Lana [sic] dura 2. An arrow 3 To turn head down and tail or flukes up as whales, porpoises seals &c do. Áipata. v. tr. To take, fetch, bring, get, take away as eggs in a cloth, berries in a basket &c. [[2 To put all in.]] To take one away.

Áiteka. s Aiwösella pl. vs. tr. To put, put down, place an “aiiūed” spear on anything.

Aitūmīna. v. tr pl. of which the sing. is Ái[[p]]ata. To bring, take, pick up aiiūed spears.

Aiwörāgū. To take, fetch, bring ashore an aiiūed spear or spears.

Aiwāgöpi pl. of Áiatö́pi v. tr. To put “aiiūed” spears aboard a canoe.

Aiyēikaia. v. tr. To call or summon up.

Aiyḗata. v. tr. To call to a person & thus cause him to come. To take fetch, bring a person by calling him. To call onward. To call out from others.
